How to Care for Dry, Curly Hair

Date:

Do You Have Curls?

Growing up, I always had healthy hair. I take steps to prevent hair damage because I use heat to style my hair and I find it fun to dye my hair. I also have a hair maintenance routine that ensures my hair stays healthy. It’s far from dry or curly, though.

Then, my third little baby was born. Her hair type is dry and frizzy. Without proper hair care, hair can become a mess and can only be tamed by tying it into a bun. It took me a long time, a lot of trial and error, but I finally developed a complete system to care for her hair, make it look beautiful and stay moist.

Ditch Cheap Shampoos

We moved from baby shampoos to Pantene and other brands. Then, while at Family Dollar, my little one found the frozen shampoo. She was dying for it. It’s just a dollar. I bought it for her without even thinking about it. Within a day, her hair looked worse damaged than I had in my life. I’m mortified.

Never used cheap shampoo on her hair again. Instead, it’s just great branding. Thankfully, we never ran into this issue again. She is equally ashamed and understands why we don’t use frozen shampoos anymore.

Use Daily Leave-In Conditioner

When your hair is dry, damaged, or frizzy, you need to constantly moisturize it. Leave-in conditioner is the best product. We use Australian leave-in conditioner. I’ve had a hard time finding it in stores lately, but you can still order it from Amazon. We use this every day. (It also worked wonders when my eldest daughter’s hair was badly damaged.) )

Consider Using Hair Oil

Leave-in conditioners are not for everyone. I love Aussie because it doesn’t make anyone’s hair feel or look greasy. However, sometimes this is not an option.

At that time, I was using Brazilian hair oil. Hair oils and serums are not only very effective for damaged hair, but they also provide much-needed moisture for dry hair. When used in small amounts, you can enjoy all the benefits of hair oil without making your hair look greasy.

Always Use Conditioner After Shampooing

When hair is damaged, it loses its protective outer layer that helps lock in moisture. The conditioner will be covered over the hair, thus acting as a protective layer for the hair. The same is true for dry hair!

Do a Hair Mask Once a Week

Hair masks are just as popular as other products, but they should be. Depending on the hair mask, these hair masks are very beneficial for your hair.

There are two different types of hair masks on the market. One of them acts like a leave-in conditioner. You apply it to your hair every morning, just like with other products. Another hair mask is used once a week. These hair masks are applied to the hair just like shampoo. Then, wait until it’s time to wash it off (the bottle will tell you) and wash your hair. Some hair masks recommend rinsing with water only. Others say you should use shampoos. It is very important to read the instructions to make sure they are used correctly.

Avoid Damaging the Hair as Much as Possible

My youngest loved to blow dry her hair after the shower. Unfortunately, this only happens in rare cases. We try to avoid any type of heat to prevent further damage to her hair. You also need to avoid:

  • Any styling that may involve heat
  • Excessive hair washing
  • The water is particularly hot
  • Cheap styling products

This won’t make your hair less curly, but preventing damage will help you guarantee that your hair doesn’t get worse.

Develop a Hair Care Routine

Everyone’s hair care routine will be different. If your hair needs the extra coating provided by conditioner, you can include washing your hair with conditioner every night, but using the shampoo every other day. It’s a good idea to incorporate a hair mask into your hair care routine.

Our morning hair care routine includes moisturizing, grooming and styling with leave-in conditioner. After combing her hair, I combed it with my fingers to make sure it was properly moisturized.

Our overnight hair care routine includes washing and conditioning. No heat is used. When I dried her hair, I never wiped her entire head with a towel. Instead, I gently moved the towel from her scalp to the ends of her hair, squeezing as I went. This helps to dry her hair without knots.

As you can see, I moisturize her hair at least twice a day. If something happens and she doesn’t shower at night, I use leave-in conditioner or hair oil at night. This not only moisturizes the hair, but also prevents knots!

Conclusion

If you want to know how to care for dry hair, remember that the key is to keep your hair moist. While I love Australian leave-in conditioners, hair oil may be better for your hair. Try both. Consider what’s best for your hair and develop a personal hair care routine to keep your hair silky smooth.
