How to Reduce Hair Color Fading

Date:

Hair fading is an unfortunate problem that can occur even with permanent dyes. When fading begins to occur, once vibrant, beautiful hues become monotonous and lifeless. But this doesn’t have to be the case! Fading can be slowed or even reversed by rapid retouching.

Why Does Hair Fade?

Even if you use a permanent dye, the hair color will fade, which is a fact that should be expected when dyeing your hair. This is ultimately the result of several different factors, including:

  • How the dye is used and the condition of the hair.
  • How often you wash your hair and the shampoo you use.
  • The way you design your hair and the tools you use.
  • Exposure to sunlight and humidity.

Understanding how these factors affect and contribute to fading is not only important to reduce fading, but can even help you color your hair in a way that makes the color last.

How to Improve Dye Application?

The way dyes are used is absolutely essential to slow down the process of hair fading, as it is directly related to why fading occurs.

Permanent dyes remain permanent because of the chemical action of the developer on the dye molecules, transforming the dye molecules into a form that binds and traps them inside the hair shaft. This causes these molecules to become too large to be washed away.

Understanding how it works can already give you two great insights into the reasons behind dye fading. That is, the dye has not been allowed to develop color for a long enough time, and the strength of the developer used is too low.

Dye Color Development Time

Dyes must pass enough time to gain persistence, which directly affects the degree of fading that occurs long after the dye is processed and washed off.

Ideally, letting the dye develop color for the maximum time recommended by the particular brand you’re using is almost always the right choice. While your hair may appear the right color earlier than that, washing it off too early can lead to color that doesn’t last, and when you’re forced to wash it, it leads to greater costs and wasted time. Retouch the shadow earlier than is otherwise necessary.
